The Family You Choose: Creating Healthy Community

Becoming more mindful of those we associate with is a great first step to creating healthy community around you.

The people we spend the most time with really do have an impact on the lives we live. There is truth to the quote motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously said: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
What changes do you want to make in your life?

Is the community you have around you contributing to that growth?

Are you being intentional with those you allow in your life?

We are constantly interacting with others’ thoughts, feelings and actions which all impact our own thoughts, feelings and actions. Both consciously and subconsciously, each person influences another. If we want inner change, sometimes we need outer change, including those we spend the most time with. This pertains not only to those we spend time with in person, but also online, or even via books, videos, movies, and podcasts.

As simple as it sounds, it is easier said than done. We may not be able to avoid spending lots of time with family members or coworkers who are on very different paths than we are on. In these scenarios, it is important to find compassion for people who are making different decisions than we are, and to look closely at ourselves to make sure we are not adopting any of their behaviors or ideas that are unhealthy for us.

Aside from those associations which we cannot avoid, each one of us has a large area of friendships and personal connections that we do have control over. We can choose who we spend time with as friends, who we want to open up to, and who we want to share activities with. Ask yourself bluntly- are my friends lifting me up, or holding me back? Do they have qualities that I aspire to, or do they represent old parts of myself that I am wanting to move beyond?

Ask yourself bluntly- are my friends lifting me up, or holding me back? Do they have qualities that I aspire to, or do they represent old parts of myself that I am wanting to move beyond?

This is not to say that we want to create an echo chamber or homogenous group around us that only sees things the same way that we do. We can respect like mindedness while also honoring the differences in our mindsets, especially when those differences are positive and expanded consciousness that can support us in our own growth. Diversity is strength, and it is healthy to have our own ideas challenged in constructive ways. What matters most is that the community around us supports our growth and shares the qualities that we want to embody- truth, resilience, compassion, authenticity, and so on.

Choosing Wisely

Becoming more mindful of those we associate with, especially those we are around regularly, is a great first step to the change you want to see in yourself and the world. If you are looking to grow into becoming a certain person with certain traits, speaking or learning about certain topics, partaking in certain actions or leaving harmful actions behind, being around those who embody how you want to be or are working towards the same intention of positive growth and change will be helpful for your very own personal growth.

Reading books, listening to podcasts, and other various ways of taking in information of great thought and heart leaders can influence and impact your own mind and heart. So be mindful of the media that you consume as well, because consciously and subconsciously, it will impact the way you see the world.

There are many ways to be around individuals who will create the growth within yourself, as well as contributing to the growth of the community. Support groups and coaching classes, such as the ones offered from Being True To You, are a great way to step into a community of like minded individuals.
