Psychedelic Science: A Billion-Dollar Industry, but at What Cost?

New Research on the Psychedelic Frontier and its Impact on Indigenous Peoples

MAY 19, 2022

Research in psychedelics is a new and growing industry worth billions, but it comes at a cost to those who have been using psychedelics for centuries.

The psychedelic movement is here, and according to all metrics, here to stay. This movement is carved into three main paths: “therapeutic, religious, and recreational — each of which involves very different players, areas of law, and, in some instances, competing interests” (Harvard Law). It is estimated that $2 billion has been poured into research and clinical trials this year in the emerging area of psychedelic medicine and is projected to grow to $10.75 billion by 2027 (Research and Markets). As Michael Pollan says: “Capitalism is falling in love with psychedelics. There’s a gold rush” (Michael Pollan).

What is a Shadow Work?

Shadow work is an essential part of self-discovery that involves getting to know your ‘dark side’. Sounds fun? Don’t fret. Here is breakdown of what your shadow is, how to work with it, and why this work matters.

JANUARY 18, 2022

Once upon a time, I used to go in the woods with a wilderness instructor who gently guided me towards reconnecting with myself. After a gruelling session of crying and self-pitying, he encouraged me to read the Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace your Power by Carolyn Elliott. The title had peaked my interest but the subtitle sealed the deal: A Method for Getting What You Want By Getting off on What You Don’t.

What is a Dark Night of the Soul?

You could describe the experience of the global pandemic as the “dark night of the soul”. What exactly does it mean and how do you know you’re experiencing “dark night of the soul”?

FEBRUARY 15, 2022

Sometimes, it can feel that there is no end in sight. When the pandemic hit, my mom called to say it was the “end of the world”. Most of us have felt that they had “hit rock bottom” at one point in their lives; it is part of the human condition.

When someone tells you they are experiencing the “dark night of the soul”, it could mean that they are either deeply depressed, having a few bad days or they reeling from the loss of a loved one. It can be confusing. Though we now use the term loosely to mean suffering, the “dark night of soul” originally meant a spiritual crisis rather than a mental one.

Alternative to 12-steps

As the pandemic squeezes our health workers availability, know that 12 step program is not the only available help out there if you are struggling with addiction.

FEBRUARY 08, 2022

The author of this article was brought up by two alcoholic parents and struggled with addictions throughout her life. At the time, AA and their 12-steps seemed like the place people turned as the last resort. I remember watching movies and TV series like the Wire in which people would sit in a circle, cry, yell at each other and confessed their worst moments after intoning the familiar refrain: “Hi, my name is … and I’m an addict”. You could not have paid me to attend one of their meetings. After my own journey of recovery, I appreciate how important 12-step programs can be for people. I also know that they are not the only ones that can offer support for those seeking help.

Holding Space

What does it mean to Hold Space?

As health care providers are struggling to meet demand, we look at what it means to hold space for one another and a template on how to do so.

FEBRUARY 01, 2022

To “Hold Space” has become the buzz term in the relational world of coaches, facilitators and care nurses. I’ve now had several friends complain to me when I use the term loosely. “What does that even mean?” they’d ask. A colleague, frustrated with the ubiquity of the term at work, put it best: holding space basically means “being a decent human being”, “being there” for someone else. Goodness knows we all need some of that in an era of global pandemic that has us at a loss of how to wrap our heads – and our hearts – around what is actually happening.
