Psychedelic Science: A Billion-Dollar Industry, but at What Cost?

New Research on the Psychedelic Frontier and its Impact on Indigenous Peoples

MAY 19, 2022

Research in psychedelics is a new and growing industry worth billions, but it comes at a cost to those who have been using psychedelics for centuries.

The psychedelic movement is here, and according to all metrics, here to stay. This movement is carved into three main paths: “therapeutic, religious, and recreational — each of which involves very different players, areas of law, and, in some instances, competing interests” (Harvard Law). It is estimated that $2 billion has been poured into research and clinical trials this year in the emerging area of psychedelic medicine and is projected to grow to $10.75 billion by 2027 (Research and Markets). As Michael Pollan says: “Capitalism is falling in love with psychedelics. There’s a gold rush” (Michael Pollan).

What is a Shadow Work?

Shadow work is an essential part of self-discovery that involves getting to know your ‘dark side’. Sounds fun? Don’t fret. Here is breakdown of what your shadow is, how to work with it, and why this work matters.

JANUARY 18, 2022

Once upon a time, I used to go in the woods with a wilderness instructor who gently guided me towards reconnecting with myself. After a gruelling session of crying and self-pitying, he encouraged me to read the Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace your Power by Carolyn Elliott. The title had peaked my interest but the subtitle sealed the deal: A Method for Getting What You Want By Getting off on What You Don’t.

Dark Night of the Soul

What is a Dark Night of the Soul?

You could describe the experience of the global pandemic as the “dark night of the soul”. What exactly does it mean and how do you know you’re experiencing “dark night of the soul”?

FEBRUARY 15, 2022

Sometimes, it can feel that there is no end in sight. When the pandemic hit, my mom called to say it was the “end of the world”. Most of us have felt that they had “hit rock bottom” at one point in their lives; it is part of the human condition.

When someone tells you they are experiencing the “dark night of the soul”, it could mean that they are either deeply depressed, having a few bad days or they reeling from the loss of a loved one. It can be confusing. Though we now use the term loosely to mean suffering, the “dark night of soul” originally meant a spiritual crisis rather than a mental one.

Alternative to 12-steps

As the pandemic squeezes our health workers availability, know that 12 step program is not the only available help out there if you are struggling with addiction.

FEBRUARY 08, 2022

The author of this article was brought up by two alcoholic parents and struggled with addictions throughout her life. At the time, AA and their 12-steps seemed like the place people turned as the last resort. I remember watching movies and TV series like the Wire in which people would sit in a circle, cry, yell at each other and confessed their worst moments after intoning the familiar refrain: “Hi, my name is … and I’m an addict”. You could not have paid me to attend one of their meetings. After my own journey of recovery, I appreciate how important 12-step programs can be for people. I also know that they are not the only ones that can offer support for those seeking help.

Holding Space

What does it mean to Hold Space?

As health care providers are struggling to meet demand, we look at what it means to hold space for one another and a template on how to do so.

FEBRUARY 01, 2022

To “Hold Space” has become the buzz term in the relational world of coaches, facilitators and care nurses. I’ve now had several friends complain to me when I use the term loosely. “What does that even mean?” they’d ask. A colleague, frustrated with the ubiquity of the term at work, put it best: holding space basically means “being a decent human being”, “being there” for someone else. Goodness knows we all need some of that in an era of global pandemic that has us at a loss of how to wrap our heads – and our hearts – around what is actually happening.

How Do I Help My Addicted Child?

Having a child stuggling with an addiction is one of the most difficult situations any parent can face. Here are ways you can support your child through their addiction.

JANUARY 25, 2022

Having a child with an addiction is one of the most difficult situations a parent can face. Whether your child is a teen or an adult, addiction is devastating. It can be hard to know what to do when your child is struggling with an addiction. Initially, it can come as a huge shock. Addiction counselor Mark Levine remarked: “Parents are always in denial in the beginning…It’s the emotionally safe thing to do. To acknowledge a problem would cause most parents to blame themselves – something they would rather avoid.” Our human instinct is often to act as if nothing is happening. The key to learning how to behave around an addict is to open your eyes to the problem.

What is Microdosing?

Would you care for a drop of LSD in your morning coffee?

JANUARY 18, 2022

Microdosing is the latest trend in the psychedelic world. It involves taking very low doses of a psychedelic substance, such as LSD or psilocybin mushrooms on a regular basis. Such a technique allows a user to achieve a better state of equilibrium, as opposed to the intense trip that is often synonymous with a psychedelic experience.

It first emerged in San Francisco, less than a decade ago, when workers in Silicon Valley discovered that taking small amounts of LSD and psilocybin mushrooms every few days made them more focused, creative, and productive.

Psilocybin

What is Psilocybin Like?

While keeping in mind that experiences with Psilocybin are often referred to as “ineffable,” let’s dive in and provide an overview of what an experience with Psilocybin is like.

JANUARY 11, 2022

Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound found in ‘Magic Mushrooms.’ When ingested, Psilocybin stimulates serotonin 2A receptors in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, affecting mood, cognition and perception.

While there is no definitive way to answer the question of what Psilocybin is like, we can unpack what can occur during a Psilocybin experience. Psilocybin can take you on a deep dive into your subconscious. It provides a unique opportunity to become aware – and potentially address – of what has been repressed. With Psilocybin, it is possible to face our ‘shadow’. The shadow, in this instance, represents all the unconscious parts of yourself that your ego doesn’t want to admit to.

Can DMT Combat Addiction?

An increasing number of people are turning to DMT in a quest to overcome their addictions.

DECEMBER 28, 2021

DMT is a powerful hallucinogen that comes in two forms: natural and synthetic. The first form occurs naturally in many plants and animals. Take, for example, Ayahuasca. It is a potent South American brew used by native Amazonian tribes for religious rituals and recreation, with DMT being the main psychoactive ingredient. However, the other form of DMT can be extracted in a laboratory to make a pure, crystalline white powder. This can either be smoked or snorted.

With the astonishing amounts of promising research and increased attention on and access to psychedelics, it’s only natural to consider using them. Before you do, it’s crucial that you know how to use psychedelics responsibly.

DECEMBER 21, 2021

Before we go into how to use psychedelics responsibly, let’s explain what psychedelics are. Psychedelics are hallucinogenic compounds that alter perception and mood and have effects on many of our cognitive processes. As powerful as psychedelics are, they are considered to be generally safe and not addictive, making them a revolutionary tool for various types of healing.

Commonly spoken about psychedelics or compounds with psychedelic properties include: Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms), LSD (Acid), MDMA (Molly, Ecstasy), Ketamine, DMT, Ayahuasca, Mescaline (Peyote, San Pedro), Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT.

Can Ayahuasca help my Problem with Addiction?

Perhaps you’ve heard about Ayahuasca or know someone who has had a profound experience at an Ayahuasca retreat and are wondering, can ayahuasca help my problem with addiction?

DECEMBER 14, 2021

Certain places have decriminalized having small amounts of psychedelic substances, but brewing or having larger amounts with intended ceremonial use or distribution is still a punishable offense.

There are several religions that use Ayahuasca as a sacrament. They have a religious exemption and conduct legal, sacramental use in the U.S. and Canada as well as several others that are asserting their rights, but do not have a formal exemption. If you fundamentally believe in these religions, there is the option to join an Ayahuasca church.

What is Psychedelic Integration?

Psychedelic experiences, especially when set with an intention, have an incredible potential to catalyze change in one’s life. But psychedelic integration might just hold the key to lasting transformation.

DECEMBER 09, 2021

Psychedelics have become known for their visionary experiences, higher states of consciousness, mood and sense enhancement, and ability to elicit perceptual shifts within one’s psyche. When used in the context of a healing journey—that is , seeking to heal oneself from pain or trauma—they can provide a powerful platform by which to transform the self through deep and personal psychedelic experiences. In many cases, this can even lead to profound “breakthroughs” that shift a person’s understanding of themselves and their world. When this happens, one is often left to wonder, “what now?”, or “how do I use this information to improve my life?”

Why Family Recovery Matters More Than Ever

The COVID -19 pandemic has obscured the rising addiction epidemic. If you are supporting a loved one struggling with addiction today, this is the workshop for you.

DECEMBER 02, 2021

Since, I have picked my mom up from the street, passed out, at 11am. I shuffled her 5 pieces of luggage wherever she went. I offered to pay for a sober living then watched as the day she got out of rehab, she went directly to a hotel to drink. I called the ER after finding her in a pile of feces, food rotting on the floor. I spent my mother’s birthday wondering if she was alive. Trying to ‘rescue’ my mom came at a heavy cost: I lost my job, my accommodation, my Airbnb account, and my car directly due to my mom. Through it all, I was racked with guilt: what if I had called more often, been kinder, wiser, more understanding, more patient, less angry? Maybe then she would want to get better.

Is 5-MeO-DMT the World’s Most Powerful Psychedelic?

When discussing profound psychedelic experiences, 5-MeO-DMT often enters the conversation. But does it deserve its reputation as the world’s most powerful psychedelic?

NOVEMBER 29, 2021

Psychedelic “power” is often defined by the intensity of the psychedelic experience to shift one’s perception of reality from their normal state of consciousness into an often described “higher state” that feels as though it exists outside the body. At the top end of these “higher states”, we have “near death experiences” and pure white light experiences. These are experiences where one senses a complete dissolution of the self into a state of oneness with the universe or a perceived divine creator. Naturally, one wonders if these are the most powerful psychedelic experiences possible.

Does Ketamine Therapy Work? A Brief Overview of Ketamine Therapy

With all the hype around Ketamine Therapy, you’re bound to feel curious about its different aspects and efficacy.

NOVEMBER 16, 2021

What Does Ketamine Therapy Do?

Let’s start off with a bit of clarity around what ketamine is and how Ketamine Therapy works on the brain. Ketamine is a dissociative compound that has long been used as an anesthetic in operating rooms and on battlefields. Over time, it showed to have some unexpected side effects- including the alleviation of depressive symptoms and suicidality.
Ketamine Therapy has since emerged and has shown to be effective in lessening symptoms of debilitating conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD and other depressive disorders.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of psychedelic integration when it comes to getting the most out of an entheogenic experience..

NOVEMBER 04, 2021

When it comes to transformative journeys of healing and personal growth, the importance of psychedelic integration cannot be overstated. Psychedelic journeys can show you the mountain top, but they inevitably bring you back to basecamp as you come down- they do not make that journey a permanent new home. Integration can be seen as the process of retaining the map that psychedelic experiences provide, and making steady progress day after day to reach that peak and retain those insights in the day-to-day world.

If we want inner change, sometimes we need outer change, including those we spend the most time with. NOVEMBER 02, 2021

Ibogaine is derived through the purification of the root bark of the African iboga shrub, scientifically known as Tabernanthe iboga. Originally used as a sacrament and medicine by the Pygmy and Bwiti tribes of West Africa, iboga has gained popularity around the world for its therapeutic potential and power to transform the mind, body, and spirit. Ibogaine, one of twelve alkaloids contained in iboga, was miraculously discovered by Howard Lotsof in the 1960’s when he realized its power to detox the body from an opiate/heroin addiction. Since then, ibogaine has spread worldwide for the treatment of opiate addiction and other addictions. As one of the most powerful entheogenic substances on the planet with some dangerous contraindications, ibogaine should only to be administered by medical professionals in a medically sound and trusted facility where ibogaine is legal.

Ayahuasca: The Vine of Souls

Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca: The Vine of Souls

NOVEMBER 02, 2021

Ayahuasca is a powerful psychedelic Amazonian brew, traditionally made from two plants- the B. caapi vine and admixtures such as P. viridis (and/or other DMT-containing plants). It is the vine that works as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), preventing the breakdown of DMT from the leaf in the stomach so that it can produce psychedelic effects. The vine helps the leaf work better by slowing down the metabolism of the DMT. It also allows more neurotransmitters to be available to the brain (including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine), which helps people feel better psychologically and physically. Interestingly, people believe the healing comes mostly from the vine versus the leaf that creates the visionary experience. In the West people tend to like flashy visions and this is how many people evaluate the results of their experience; however, there are many benefits regardless of visions because the MAOI is allowing for a complete rehabilitation of the serotonergic system, which is a core reason people with chronic depression often benefit so much with ayahuasca.
