Alternative to 12-steps
As the pandemic squeezes our health workers availability, know that 12 step program is not the only available help out there if you are struggling with addiction.

The author of this article was brought up by two alcoholic parents and struggled with addictions throughout her life. At the time, AA and their 12-steps seemed like the place people turned as the last resort. I remember watching movies and TV series like the Wire in which people would sit in a circle, cry, yell at each other and confessed their worst moments after intoning the familiar refrain: “Hi, my name is … and I’m an addict”. You could not have paid me to attend one of their meetings. After my own journey of recovery, I appreciate how important 12-step programs can be for people. I also know that they are not the only ones that can offer support for those seeking help.
